Farmers’ markets in mid-summer in small towns abound with flowers, honey, vegetables and fresh fruit from local trees. Locals sitting in the backs of pick-ups talking with friends, selling my favorite green gage plums, grapes, chile and other summer produce are a lovely reminder of small town beauty. A Saturday morning in the center of town brings out people playing their violins and guitars, a bit of magic, a few homemade scones. Groups of ladies holding court, men sit on the curbs and wait for their wives, children run mad with peach juice dripping from their lips and everyone’s happy. It is a healthy reminder that small towns have vibrancy and life, even if it is sometimes lost in the complexity of the complications of everyday life.
